Mustarinda
Hyrynsalmi, Finland
The Mustarinda Residency, located in the pristine natural environment of Kainuu, Finland, offers artists, researchers, writers, and curators a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in their creative practices while surrounded by one of Finland’s last remaining primeval forests. The residency encourages interdisciplinary and boundary-crossing work that explores contemporary art, environmental values, and cultural diversity. Residents stay in a communal, eco-friendly house powered by renewable energy sources, with access to shared spaces such as saunas, a library, and hiking trails. Mustarinda also promotes the importance of slow travel, encouraging residents to consider eco-friendly transportation options. Residencies are available for two-week or one-month periods, and selection prioritizes applicants who align with Mustarinda’s commitment to community-building and ecosocial wellbeing. Collaborative engagement and shared tasks, such as cooking and housekeeping, are integral to the experience, with opportunities to participate in various local and ecological projects.
