Arthereistanbul, founded in 2014 in Istanbul, Turkey, was initially established to provide Syrian artists facing difficulties with a space for artistic creation, away from the impacts of war and political strife. This unique residency offers a haven for artists to work, exhibit their creations, and sustain themselves through a café and the organization of workshops, screenings, and performances. Emphasizing a custom-made residency program, Arthereistanbul opens its doors to artists, researchers, curators, and writers from all backgrounds, aligning projects with the residency’s vision. The program encourages research, creativity, and cultural exchanges among Syrian, Turkish, and international artists, aiming to foster dialogue, diversity, and understanding. Arthereistanbul equips its residents with studio spaces, archive rooms, exhibition and performance areas, and technical facilities, including a dark room and woodworking tools. Accommodation is provided in Kadiköy, near the residency space, ensuring a comfortable and conducive environment for artistic and cultural exploration.

Aviário Studio (Aviario)

Ferreira do Zêzere, Portugal

Aviário Studio, nestled in Ferreira do Zêzere, Portugal, offers a range of art residencies including Self-Directed, Guided, and Assisted Production residencies. Residency durations vary from 2 weeks to 6 months, accommodating both emerging and established artists. The studio, which operates from Monday to Friday, provides each resident with a workspace, technical assistance, and access to specialized workshops. For additional fees, extended technical support and materials can be procured. Accommodation options are available on-site with alternatives being handled by the resident if preferred. Aviário Studio is well-equipped with facilities for a variety of artistic practices such as printmaking, ceramics, and digital arts, ensuring a productive and creative stay.

Frans Masereel Centrum

Kasterlee, Belgium

Frans Masereel Centrum is a renowned center for contemporary art in Belgium, offering international residency programs for artists, researchers, and academics. Established in 1972, the center focuses on printmaking, providing a creative environment equipped with professional facilities. The residency programs, which include individual, collective, and art school residencies, do not require prior knowledge of printmaking techniques. Each year, around 50 national and international artists are selected through an open call to develop and create print-related projects. The center is located in a serene, wooded area, offering an inspiring setting for artistic exploration and collaboration. Residents have access to a variety of printmaking techniques, including typography, intaglio, screen printing, and digital printing. The center fosters a community atmosphere, encouraging informal consultations, feedback, and collaboration among peers. Despite a temporary halt in activities from September 2024 to December 2025 for construction, the center will resume its vibrant residency programs in spring 2026.

Grafisch Atelier Friesland (Graphic Atelier Friesland)

Every month, GAF offers workshops that introduce participants to techniques such as color linocut, etching, and other forms of printmaking. The studio collaborates with several educational institutions, including NHL Stenden, Minerva Academy for Pop Culture, and local schools, offering tailored programs that meet the needs of different age groups and skill levels. For educators, GAF provides custom project development and adaptable lessons in collaboration with schools, with a maximum group size of 15 students to ensure personalized attention. The atelier also participates in local educational initiatives like Art Menu Plus and Art Trip to enhance cultural and artistic education.

The residencies are open to emerging and mid-career artists and professionals from any field, provided their work is compatible with the site’s limitations.
