Originally founded in 1989 and encompassing 120 artist studios, the program is housed in the historical halls 18 and 19. It's dedicated to fostering artistic growth and integration into Amsterdam's cultural landscape. The residency offers a 70 m2 private studio and living space to a diverse range of creatives, including visual artists, mixed media practitioners, performance artists, designers, researchers, curators, and writers. The three-month program emphasizes reflection, creation, and dissemination, culminating in an exhibition at puntWG, an interdisciplinary project space.

Anderson Center at Tower View

Red Wing, Minnesota, United States

The Anderson Center at Tower View, located in Red Wing, Minnesota, offers residencies from May through October to artists, writers, musicians, and performers. Hosting about 35-40 residents annually, the program is one of the largest in the Upper Midwest and has welcomed over 900 artists from 45 states and 40 countries since its inception in 1995. ARC Athens

ARCAthens, established in 2017 as a not-for-profit organization in Athens, Greece, offers a flagship program known as the Athens Residency. This program provides two fully-funded fellowship opportunities, one each for visual artists and curators. These fellowships enable participants to live and work in Athens, immersing themselves in the city's ongoing cultural renaissance. The program is renowned for its comprehensive approach, including promotional services and robust networking opportunities like studio visits, private collection tours, and bespoke tours of local institutions. The residency, free from extensive obligations, does require fellows to participate in a bespoke seminar and a public end-of-residency event. Practical aspects of the fellowship include a two-month duration, a $2,000 USD prize, air travel, a weekly stipend, and accommodation with shared facilities. The selection process involves an independent committee.

Monthly, B93 hosts an exhibition (Carte Blanche) and an opening in the same building. ARE offers two guest studios for international artists for a three-month period, culminating in a solo exhibition at B93's exhibition space. ARE's mission is to support artists globally in their artistic development and to promote cultural exchange and global connections. Blue Mountain Center (BMC)

Blue Mountain Center focuses on providing a space that facilitates both the creation of transformative works and the rejuvenation of its residents. BMC operates on the core values of racial, economic, and environmental justice, and gender equality, welcoming a diverse group of applicants particularly those producing work that reflects social and ecological concerns. BMC offers month-long residencies from June to September each year, supporting a range of creative disciplines including writing, filmmaking, and visual arts, among others. Residents are selected by an admissions committee of accomplished authors and artists through a process that prioritizes work aimed at a general audience with a clear social conscience. The residency provides studio space, accommodation, and communal living areas, all set against the backdrop of the scenic Blue Mountain Lake. This setting not only inspires artistic endeavors but also encourages personal well-being and community interaction, free from the distractions of everyday life such as cell phones and constant internet connectivity.

Boghossian Foundation Residency

The Boghossian Foundation Residency, nestled in the Villa Empain's serene gardens in Brussels, offers a unique retreat for artists from diverse backgrounds. Established in the refurbished housekeeper’s building, the residency has been a creative sanctuary since its opening in 2010. Bundanon's Artists in Residence program, set within the cultural and natural landscape of Australia, is one of the most extensive of its kind nationally. Established by Arthur and Yvonne Boyd, the program has been operational since 1997, supporting over 250 artists annually across all creative disciplines, including visual arts, writing, music, and performance. Located in a region renowned for its scenic beauty, this program not only offers a retreat for artists but also a vibrant community space for creative exploration and public engagement. The residency facilities at Bundanon include studios, rehearsal spaces, and accommodation in single and shared apartments, as well as self-contained cottages capable of hosting up to 10 people. The program is designed to encourage artistic development without the pressure of specified outcomes, allowing for experimental and exploratory approaches to art-making. This supportive environment is supplemented by various fellowships and awards, aimed at providing financial assistance and facilitating creative growth. Structured through collaborations with various arts organizations and cultural agencies, Bundanon’s residency program serves as an incubator for innovative practices and a forum for cultivating deep connections among artists from around the world. With its commitment to diversity and inclusion, the program particularly encourages applications from First Nations artists, artists with disabilities, culturally and linguistically diverse artists, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

CASA

Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada

The Artist in Residence (AiR) program at Casa in Lethbridge, Alberta, offers a supportive and community-based atmosphere for artists from various disciplines and experience levels, including recent undergraduates. The program includes workshops, installations, open houses, and artist talks, fostering community engagement and new perspectives. Artists are provided with space free of charge and are encouraged to seek funding for travel, lodging, and per diems from granting agencies. Casa assists with public engagement opportunities and supports successful candidates in their grant applications. The application deadlines are January 15 and June 15 each year, with residencies scheduled between June and December or January and June of the following year. Casa is managed by the Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge, a non-profit arts organization and registered charity.

Casa Lu (Casa Lü)

Casa Lü is a creative community sanctuary in Mexico City, fostering artistic and personal growth through immersive art experiences, inspired by the Tibetan concept of 'lü', emphasizing life as a temporary journey. The residency, tailored by artists for artists, aims to cultivate global dialogue and showcase the vibrant local art scene, offering residents a chance to explore and integrate with Mexico City's dynamic cultural landscape. Casa Lü hosts international artists, providing a supportive environment with living and/or working spaces, and fostering a collaborative atmosphere with a diverse group of six artists-in-residence per session. Two distinct programs are offered: the Regular Residency Program for experienced artists, and the Emerging Artist Residency Program, specifically designed for artists at the beginning of their journey or transitioning from other disciplines. Both programs include accommodation, studio space, logistical support, art scene excursions, weekly meetings for project feedback, and a group exhibition with professional documentation. The Emerging Artist Program additionally offers educational elements like workshops for portfolio development and lectures on the Mexican contemporary art scene. Located between Roma, Condesa, San Ángel, and Coyoacán, the residency is near 'Parque Hundido' park, offering a serene environment with convenient access to the city's rich artistic offerings. Casa Lü's thoughtful schedule includes welcome events, weekly excursions, interactive sessions, open studios, and a concluding group exhibition, fostering deep connections between resident artists and the local community.

Chateau d'Orquevaux (Château d'Orquevaux)

The Chateau d'Orquevaux artist residency, set in France's tranquil Champagne-Ardenne, offers an idyllic environment for artists and writers. This program features private studios and bedrooms, set within a historic French chateau, providing a serene space for creative endeavors. All meals are included, allowing residents to fully immerse in their art without daily distractions. The Denis Diderot Grant, awarded to participants, assists with residency costs, highlighting the program's dedication to supporting artists. Community engagement is encouraged through artist presentations, literature nights, and group art activities, fostering a rich cultural exchange. The residency, accommodating around 15 artists at a time, ensures an intimate and supportive atmosphere. A welcoming champagne dinner introduces artists to the Chateau and fellow residents, setting the tone for a collaborative experience. Cité internationale des Arts

Paris, France

The Cité internationale des Arts, founded in 1965, is a renowned artist residency program in Paris, France. It facilitates cross-cultural dialogue and offers artists from around the world a platform to engage with the public and professionals. Annually, over 1,200 artists participate in the residency, with more than 300 new residents each month. The Cité collaborates with 135 long-standing partners from over 60 countries, fostering a rich environment for creative exchange. The residency provides 326 studios across two locations: Marais and Montmartre. These studios are designed to support various aspects of contemporary creation, offering spaces for production, experimentation, and research. Each studio, ranging from 20 m² to 60 m², includes a workspace, kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping area. Residents can host guests for extended periods, subject to additional charges. Artists can apply for residency through the Cité's selection committees or via its network of long-standing partners. The Cité organizes different commissions by discipline and thematic, and also collaborates with institutions to support emerging international talents through residency programs and grants.

Culterim Gallery

Berlin, Germany

The Culterim Gallery offers an Artist-in-Residence program at two locations near Berlin: the Manor at Dahlewitz and the Manor at Biesenthal. Both residencies run from May 1st to September 30th, 2024, offering studio space, accommodation, and weekly mentored studio visits, artist presentations, and talks for a fee of 365€ per month. The Dahlewitz location, south of Berlin, features seven buildings on an 18,000 m2 plot with a small forest, while the Biesenthal location, north of Berlin, extends over several buildings and 12,000 m2 of forest next to Lake Wukensee. Both sites welcome artists for terms ranging from 2 to 5 months and conclude with a group exhibition of works created during the residency. Studios vary in size and may be individual or shared, with basic sanitary facilities and communal areas for cooking and socializing. The program is open to all art forms, and artists have 24-hour access to the premises.

Cultural Center in New York Mills

New York Mills, United States

The Arts Retreat artist residency program of the Cultural Center in New York Mills focuses on providing dedicated artists time for creative development and exploration. The program offers a unique taste of life in rural Minnesota while allowing the artists virtually uninterrupted time in which to immerse themselves in their artwork. When the Cultural Center was founded its name was “The New York Mills Arts Retreat.” The artist retreat and residency program remains central to the mission, purpose, values, and vision of the Center today. Artists from all disciplines (performance, written, audio and visual media) will be considered for a residency. The selection committee awards residencies to artists based on artistic merit and commitment to the arts. There is just one artist at a time here on residency, which supports our focus on providing virtually uninterrupted time for creative development and exploration. We provide stays of two to six weeks for artists at NO COST for room (solo occupancy of a one-bedroom house and access to studio space in our Cultural Center). Each artist provides her or his own transportation and board. There is no stipend.

Gyumri AIR

Gyumri, Armenia

Gyumri AIR, initiated by the Yerevan-based art platform art basis, is a community art space and residency project in Gyumri, Armenia. It's located in a newly constructed apartment building in the Mush-2 district, which accommodates people affected by the 1988 earthquake. This project, in collaboration with Hayastan All Armenian Fund, aims to integrate artists into the local social fabric, exploring the role and impact of art in such environments. The residency is open to artists worldwide, encouraging them to engage with the local community through public events like artist talks, workshops, and exhibitions. It offers studio spaces on the top floors of the new buildings, welcoming both individual artists and groups. The program emphasizes collaboration with local residents, fostering self-sustainability, critical thinking, creativity, and sustainable living practices. Artists applying to Gyumri AIR are encouraged to propose projects that engage the local community and environment. The residency provides four fully furnished studio rooms with necessary utilities, research assistance, and public presentation opportunities in Gyumri and Yerevan. However, it currently doesn't offer funding, and participants are expected to cover a residency fee.

Hayama

Hayama-machi, Japan

Hayama Artist Residency, located in the scenic town of Hayama in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan, offers a nurturing environment for artists to immerse in Japanese culture. The residency includes a roundtrip flight to Japan, shared accommodations at hôtel ami hayama for 4 weeks, and a weekly stipend for meals and transportation. Artists enjoy a blend of scheduled events and free time for reflection, without the pressure to create new work. A highlight is the group exhibition hosted by KOKI ARTS in Tokyo's art district, Bakurocho. Selection for the residency is made by an esteemed committee of international curators and arts professionals. The program fosters future opportunities, including a fee waiver for reapplying artists the following year.

Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency (JTHAR)

Joshua Tree, California, United States

Founded in 2007, Joshua Tree Highlands Artist Residency (JTHAR) is a non-profit organization that offers a unique residency experience for artists from around the globe. Located near the stunning Joshua Tree National Park, JTHAR provides artists with scholarship funds, living accommodations, studio space, and opportunities for open studio events. The residency is designed to foster creativity, trust, courage, diversity, and acceptance, promoting opportunities for exploration, experimentation, and engagement with the vibrant local community. Each year, JTHAR invites six artists at various career stages and working in diverse media to create work amidst the natural beauty of the park. The selection process involves a review of applications by the JTHAR Board Members, based on the artist's portfolio and residency proposal. In addition to the standard scholarship, the Gothard Family Artist Scholarship offers a stipend to a residency recipient of African American heritage, specifically for visual artists. The residency provides individual houses for living and working, with the option to use a dedicated large studio space. Artists are expected to provide their own transportation, attend a mid-residency review, and have the option of an open studio exhibition or a Zoom presentation at the end of the residency. JTHAR encourages artists to immerse themselves in the inspiring environment of Joshua Tree, contributing to the cultural landscape and fostering connections within the artistic community.

K11 Art Village

The village focuses on cultivating young talent, aiding in their artistic career development through curatorial support, project management, and creative communication guidance. It emphasizes community engagement and encourages interaction and exchange among artists and the local community. Over the past decade, K11 Art Village has established partnerships with prestigious institutions such as the Nissan Art Award in Japan, the Royal Academy of Arts in the UK, and the British and French consulates in China. The K11 Art Foundation, founded by Dr. Adrian Cheng in 2010, is a non-profit organization in Hong Kong committed to nurturing emerging Asian artists and promoting contemporary art. The foundation organizes various art projects, including exhibitions, residencies, and educational programs, fostering cross-cultural collaborations with global art and cultural institutions. These collaborations have included partnerships with renowned entities like the Royal Academy of Arts, Serpentine Galleries, Centre Pompidou, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and MoMA, among others. The foundation's efforts significantly contribute to expanding creative horizons and strengthening ties within the art community.

Künstlerdorf Schöppingen (Kunstlerdorf Schoppingen)

Since its founding in 1989, the Künstlerdorf Schöppingen in Germany has supported international artists through its residency program. Located in two historic manor houses from the early 19th century in Münsterland, close to the Dutch border, it offers a serene rural setting for creative work. The program awards around 40 grants annually in visual arts, literature, and composition, hosting artists for two to six months. Künstlerdorf Schöppingen emphasizes cross-disciplinary artistic exchange and personal and professional development in an international dialogue. The facilities include a garden, communal kitchen, workshop, library, gallery, and exhibition hall, fostering a variety of artistic processes and interactions. The program is known for its collegial advice, knowledge exchange, and non-competitive environment. The residency program is open to international artists of all ages and is selected by expert juries. In addition to the residency, Künstlerdorf Schöppingen organizes events like the CAP program to discuss artistic practices and strategies. The residency program, running from April to November, accommodates two artists each month, providing them with private rooms, personal workshops, and shared living spaces. Artists at La Chapelle Saint-Antoine benefit from the serene surroundings and the cultural richness of Naxos, an island known for its diverse landscapes and historical significance. The residency emphasizes the importance of creative exploration, cultural exchange, and the development of new works. Additionally, it fosters a community-oriented atmosphere, where artists can share ideas and experiences. La Chapelle Saint-Antoine represents a bridge between the past and present, offering a unique space where art and heritage coalesce.

LIA (Leipzig International Art Programme)

The Leipzig International Art Programme (LIA) is a non-profit artist residency located at the Spinnerei Leipzig. The Spinnerei, a former cotton factory, now serves as a unique creative workspace housing 9 galleries, an art supply market, art institutions, and etching studios. LIA's concept revolves around creating a space for cultural exchange within the artistic and cultural network of the Spinnerei. It offers a wide audience access to the art-making process and encourages discussions about art in the artists' studios. LIA has partnerships with international art institutions and enjoys support from various organizations, enabling a diverse range of artists to participate in the program.

Marble House Project

Marble House Project is an expansive, multi-disciplinary artist residency program situated in Dorset, Vermont. It emphasizes the importance of collaboration, sustainability, and community engagement by offering artists from a wide array of disciplines a place to live and work harmoniously. Focusing on conservation and organic food production, it invites artists to integrate with the natural surroundings and local community, aiming to foster both individual artistic growth and communal enrichment. With sessions running from mid-April through October, the program curates a diverse mix of approximately 60 artists annually, both from the United States and abroad, across all creative fields including visual arts, writing, choreography, music composition, performance, and culinary arts.

Millay Arts, founded in 1973 at "Steepletop," the historic estate of poet Edna St. Vincent Millay in Austerlitz, New York, offers multidisciplinary artist residencies.
