Hawthornden Castle in Midlothian, Scotland, offers an international literary residency program providing month-long retreats for creative writers including literary fiction writers, poets, short story writers, creative nonfiction writers, essayists, playwrights, screenwriters, and translators into English. The program houses six writers at a time in a peaceful castle setting with private study bedrooms, full room and board, and access to communal facilities like a library and studio. Residents receive a stipend of $1,000 (from Europe) or $2,500 (elsewhere), with eight annual four-week sessions running ten months of the year.
