The Studios of Key West

About
The Studios of Key West offers the Peyton Evans Artist Residency (PEAR) program, aimed at both emerging and established artists and writers from around the globe. Founded in 2006, The Studios began with a vision to create a space where artists could live and work, enhancing the cultural landscape of Key West. The program supports nearly 40 artists annually, facilitating creative endeavors across visual, literary, media, musical, and performing arts. Residencies typically span one month, offering artists the solitude and community needed to foster artistic exploration. The Studios emphasizes community engagement, encouraging residents to interact with local artists and participate in communal events. This residency program not only cultivates individual creativity but also aims to build lasting community connections through art.

The staff is incredible, the creative community tremendous. Be sure to swim every day and meet as many local artists as you can! Key West is expensive and there is no stipend so be ready to cook your own meals!
Location is both a huge benefit and/or a challenge depending on each project, since it's located at a great central spot, albeit a busy one. This also makes it very worthwhile, since Key West can be VERY expensive to stay at, even if there is no artist fee or other stipend given by TSKW. There are a few opportunities to connect with the local community, but it depends very much on each artist to seek them/ask for them.
TSKW is beautifully located in the heart of old town Key West. So there’s lots of opportunities to engage in both townsfolk and tourists. It’s the opposite of a residency that separates the residence from the “real world.” If you prefer to have your focus on learning and engaging with other artists, TSKW may be a disappointment. With only four artists at a time, you may make great connections or very little. Artists are responsible for their meals. If the artists are mutually interested in sharing cooking and eating together, that’s can be wonderful. If there is a lack of interest in communal meals, eating can be isolating. But kudos to the staff. They were always most helpful and kind.
The Studios of Key West is a great place for artists to focus on their work. It’s a one-month residency in a fully renovated house in the historic part of Key West. I have only great experiences, and I would love to come back. They don’t provide meals or a supplies stipend. But they give a warm atmosphere and supportive environment.
